Extrusions and extruded stock are metals, alloys, polymers, ceramics or other materials that are extruded into bar, rod, angle, channel, tee or other profile shapes. Extrusion is a manufacturing process used to form metal, ceramic or plastic parts with a fixed cross-sectional profile. Extruded materials are pushed or drawn through a die in a continuous or semi-continuous process. Temperature is an important variable. Hot extrusions and hot extruded stock are produced at an elevated temperature to prevent materials from work-hardening or strain hardening. Cold extrusions and cold extruded stock are produced at room temperature or near-room temperature. Warm extrusions and extruded stock are produced above room temperature, but below the material’s re-crystallization temperature.

Commonly extruded metals include aluminum, copper, lead, tin, magnesium, zinc, steel, titanium, and tungsten carbide. Aluminum is hot extruded or cold extruded to produce frames, rails, tracks, and heat sinks. Copper extrusions and extruded stock include bars, pipes, tubes, rods and wires. Tin and lead extrusions are used in many of these same applications. Alloy steel, carbon steel, and stainless steel can be used to produce larger rods and tracks. A versatile metal, zinc is used in extrusions and extruded stock ranging from fittings to handrails. Titanium is a lightweight metal that is used widely in aircraft components such as engine rings and seat tracks. Tungsten carbide is one of the most commonly extruded metals because of its superior toughness and durability. With all of these materials, commonly available products include extruded plates, pipes, and tubes; extruded structural stock and extruded structural shapes; and extruded profiles.

Extrusion produces high-density materials by squeezing out or closing the remaining voids. This manufacturing process also elongates and orients a material’s grains along the extruded direction. Typically, extrusions and extruded stock are used in commercial and industrial applications that require components with high-integrity material properties. Examples include the aerospace, automotive, marine, rail, off-road, processing equipment, chemical processing, and oil and gas industries. Although metal extrusions of plates, rods, tubes and bars are widely used, plastic extrusions are used to produce plastic tubing, pipes, rods, rods, seals, sheets, and film. Ceramic extrusions and extruded stock include ceramic bricks and ceramic pipes.
